Art is inspiring, depressing, beautiful, and horrific. Even things as nebulous as writing and speaking deserve a spotlight. It is a treat to see artisans plying their trade, the creation process unfolding in real-time.

Is art about skill or is it a catch-all for anything not good enough to stand on its merits? Is it about the quest for perfection however futile it may be? Is there anything happenstance about how an artist creates? Artistry happens when passion, talent, and skill connect.

A well-made custom sweater is not the same as a sloppy blouse cut from a generic pattern. A butted chain with pinch-cut ring, burrs, jagged edges, and out-of-round rings doesn't compare to true jewelry. Art is supposed to look good.

If the procedure can't be repeated consistently or recreated due to the "natural flow of the material" as one so eloquently described their pottery, was it resurrected from the reject pile?

Certain situations have to be captured as they occur, like the splash of water. Anyone could snap a picture of it but having an eye for what and how to do it requires more knowledge. "Hard" crafts like knitting and origami can be precisely duplicated time and time again with formulas and instructions provided the skill or talent is there.

Does creativity define art? For instance, the thought required for modern art, like three horizontal lines, or a painting of a Campbell's soup can? A famous creator will put lipstick on that pig.

The accompanying literature said that if we can believe it is proper art then it will open our eyes to the world.

An acclaimed museum featured plastic bottles half-filled with water suspended on a string. The accompanying literature said that if we can believe it is proper art then it will open our eyes to the world. I suppose there are many ways to interpret the message though all of them seem like an excuse.

Art signifies something more profound than a bunch of pre-arranged garbage. It should display more talent than possessed by the average seven-year-old or an animal might as well have made it.

Or a matter of perspective. For example, nearly every chopper-style motorcycle assaults my senses. However, I appreciate and respect the artistry and workmanship that went into them.

Like the word "handmade" implies prestige or higher quality, art is deserving of the same respect. It ultimately leaves us with questions and answers, relying on subjective interpretation to a degree. However, there should be no question about it being art.
