Scientific research is important, no arguing that point.
Discovering new things is part of research. But how much will a
$23B particle accelerator
or a
$10B space telescope
actually help with myriad major current problems like
food supply and safety, environment, social issues, big business, corruption,
two-faced governments, non-unity, and health care?
While it is cool to learn about mu mesons and other atomic kinfolk,
it won't help us for decades. Yeah, you must start somewhere, but also at the right time.
Knowledge for the sake of knowledge shouldn't be a reason or excuse to
push forward and waste much-needed resources on frivolity. When humankind has
better cohesion and could wholly work together, yes, but not yet.
The world is disintegrating around us and we are doing the exact opposite of stopping it.
What about not discovering new things, like
resurrecting extinct species?
Are we trying to genetically engineer such animals
because we are running out of things to massacre? Do big game hunters
need more trophies on the wall?
Have certain cultures determined that wooly mammoth bladders have special powers?
Is it a loophole around the illicit ivory trade?
Common sense would insist that
ensuring the survival of existing species would be wiser.
Enough with the poaching of supposed
magic animal parts. Habitat encroachment will have devastating effects that we may never
be able to fix. The collateral damage is inestimable.
Which begs the question: Do we really need something as ghastly as a
monkey-human hybrid?
The same can be said for many approaches we have to "problem solving" or research.
A trip to Mars to get a fresh start? Was decimating our planet just practice for
destroying a new ecosystem? In other words, even if it turns out to be a dead planet
we will somehow make it morer deader.
Why are we worrying about the minerals we can mine on the moon or Mars before we adequately
deal with micro-plastics, chemicals that
fool our bioreceptors
into thinking they are hormones? Or keeping our
air supply clean and waters pristine? Or ensuring everyone has access to basic human rights?
Our environment and world are deteriorating rapidly and we are worried about the
shit that has little if any significance for today's issues.
Eat our dinner first - the problems that need immediate solutions - then have dessert, i.e.
all the extra-planetary excursions and science fiction doodads. We have
been gorging on dessert for far too long. Mother Nature's wrath won't be swayed by large sums of cash,
slick lobbyists, corrupt politicians, or pseudo-science. It will be the final word.
