It doesn't take a CPA to understand the pandemic's negative effect on (small) businesses.
Some couldn't weather the prolonged and sporadic shutdowns resulting in an obscene
concentration of power in big companies. There is a veritable sea of monopolies now.
They were our addictive "comfort food" during the pandemic.
We gladly and thankfully make them even bigger because it is convenient.
Convenience comes at the expense of choice, privacy, and whatever else the data-crunchers want.
Unfortunately, every dollar spent is power given away.
Rejoice! Keeping up with the Joneses has never been simpler. It
is SOOO easy to order; electronic assistants ensure we don't
lift a finger. Since these companies enjoy a monopoly
you'll get what every Jones gets.
You don't have to worry about choice since there will be none. Aren't you pro-choice?
We have squandered the skills of the local
craftsperson by replacing things instead of fixing them.
The beauty and diversity of our towns have become sacrificial lambs
since every town center basically has the same chain stores.
Manufacturers enable the downslide through planned obsolescence and irreparable goods.
Some have the market control/saturation to deliver substandard products and services.
You'll have no leverage to complain when they start treating you poorly.
You'll be bored because you just gave all your power to a monopoly.
Mono-anything is boring. Where's the need for innovation? To make good products? To
price them fairly? To deal with customers like real people? To acknowledge and learn
from mistakes? To take risks?
Even a two-player monopoly reeks. Democraps and repukelicans...our political system
has the same players no matter who's in power! They call it a democracy?!
The same thing happens when any choice is similarly limited, picking between a pile of shit
and a giant douchebag.
The world is just as blinded as American consumers. From a
recent article:
"...much of the world's supply of semiconductors come from a single
company based in Taiwan: TSMC."
Notice the recent issue with baby formula? Reliance on a single company
can only result in big problems.
It's not restricted to products. A quick glance at
Hollywood bimbos
and their plastic surgery or AI enhanced
bodies and faces...can you tell them apart? What meaning does it have if it's fake or artificial?
Chainmaille and chain link jewelry share similar fates. The market is flooded with low-quality
goods. The entirety of a group act as a monopoly in this manner.
Does it really matter, something as meaningless as jewelry chains?
It's an analogy - know which side you're on.
So be thankful for same-day free shipping with unquestioned, unlimited
free returns. It's an endless cycle of buying and disposing of inferior, boring stuff.
Consumerism gives us a dopamine hit when the products suck otherwise.
And you'll gladly repeat it because you, too, are a monopoly unto yourself.
