Positive comments do little to improve how you do things. Failures and mistakes teach the most. Give
me cold, hard facts and objective observations. Keep the subjective stuff - personal taste or
bias - for your own amusement because it isn't helpful or constructive.
Besides, a posse of fair-weather admirers reeks of insecurity.
My compatriots need to awe and inspire, soothing words or not.
Except for the most nonsensical comments, if it feels insulting it is probably true.
Accept your humble pie, learn from it, don't repeat.
Unfortunately, it's a major blow to many people's fragile egos and low self-esteem.
Anything that shakes their reality is easily dismissed
because it would be devastating otherwise.
We get defensive when confronted with something that isn't our truth; we
don't like to admit fault. It threatens our public
image, something far too valued in the digital age (i.e., social media). What I find most disturbing are those
who ignore the law and go on a tirade when their fraud is exposed. MYOB they say.
This is my business, ASSHOLE LIAR FRAUDSTER SHITBALL THIEF! (Isn't that a character category in D & D?)
Here are some comments that have graced my ears:
- "You have no idea what making maille is all about!" - No one can know everything
so I suppose this must apply to everyone in some capacity.
- "You only work with silver so you don't know how difficult it is to work
with a real metal!" - Actually, I work with all metals. Titanium,
spring temper stainless...other than being harder to bend they are the easiest
and most forgiving.
Realistically, only those who have done exceptional work soldering or welding
precious metals could appreciate the ignorance of such a misguided statement.
- "I see plenty of misaligned seams and gaps in your chainmaille!" - My
rings are welded and fully seamless so I'm not sure what they're smoking.
Au contraire, their decades of experience produced a $450 sterling silver chainmaille bracelet that wasn't
soldered or welded, did not have saw-cut rings, wasn't handmade, and was riddled with gaps and misaligned closures.
- "Your stuff is overpriced!" - Overpriced and expensive are
two different animals.
Given the quality and workmanship of my finished products, the prices are legit.
The other chainmail - well, most sellers should pay someone to haul it away it is so bad!
- "You are criticizing people because you are trying to make yourself
feel better!" - I don't criticize someone for making low-quality products but will
call them out tersely when their words and actions don't match, they're doing illegal stuff, or just
plain lying. It's a hard reality these posers must acknowledge but I'm just a messenger.
- "At least people know mine is handmade by looking at it!" - I asked why they used
shear-cut rings after they lauded the precision, accuracy, and quality of CNC machines.
They preferred ugly, poorly made
rings, which they said had character, charm, and fewer sharp edges than saw-cut ones.
And fancied bad closures.
The generous gashes, gouges, and gaffs caused by their over-zealous nippers and pliers
confirmed it. Further, their items weren't even handmade according to the law.
- "No one has ever complained in my (insert any number here) years
of making jewelry!!" - Customers generally avoid confrontation so this is to be expected.
Even so, what else are these manufacturers supposed
to believe, that they are not
all that and a cup of tea? That everything they make isn't perfection personified?
I don't casually dismiss someone's beliefs but in these cases, they are wrong.
They are entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts.
