What reality show would or do you watch that is related to making and doing as opposed to backstabbing and manipulation? Cooking and dessert shows seem to be immune to this pedantic mentality. Plus there's lots of cupcakes, confections (and convections), and cakes. Gobs of icing. Icing. Mmmm.

Normally lots of snow falls in the New England region. Global temperature changes have meant mixed results for winter precipitation totals. And when it falls, we say things like heavy or fluffy, granular, frozen, and a few others. Some indigenous languages have several dozen words for snow.

One might be better for snowshoes, the other a sled dog, snowmobile, sled, etc. Snow type XYZ always means ABC from equipment to clothing. We first-worlders are mostly sheltered from the effects of snow in the ways that our ancestors weren't. Beyond "It's snowing!" little matters.

It ain't food unless you can put whipped cream or butter on it.

Anyway, about that icing. There are buttercreams named for each country it seems? The only change may be when certain ingredients are mixed together. Beyond the buttercreams are the other icings, all of which form a vernacular similar to snow descriptions. In their own way, of course.

What type of frosting is each type of snow or vice versa? Do gourmands like to jazz up their creations with words including ganache, fondant, mousse, or compote as much as they enjoy making them?

Judges get a quick but concise explanation from each competitor as their dish is brought before them. Has it become a memory game instead of a cooking thing? Would this limit how much they can cook because they can't keep track of their dish? OK, maybe a slight exaggeration; their concoctions are impressive and they won't be at a loss to describe what they made.

Cooking is fun. Mastery of some basic elements should mean being able to make signature dishes for each meal, whether ad hoc or following recipes. Basic meals might not be super-adventurous but when done well they can't be faulted. Experimentation is a possibility, too.

Dessert has my vote! That fondness defines part of my main food rule: It ain't food unless you can put whipped cream or butter on it. Or bacon. Holds pretty true but gets questionable with non-mainstream foods. Regardless, pleasing both the optimist and pessimist - quantum observation covers everyone and every situation - meals should feel partly cloudy with a chance of buttercream.
